About Climate Justice Lakehead (CJL)

Climate Justice Lakehead is a student club at Lakehead University (LU) that pursues, advocates for, and educates others about climate change, ecological sustainability, social justice, and how they intersect. The club hosts meetings, social events (e.g., bowling, craft night, potlucks), and educational events (trainings, presentations, and documentary nights). The club also engages in advocacy for climate justice on and off campus through formal deputations to the LU Board of Governors (BOG), conversations with LU admin, and organizing petitions, protests, rallies, and/or actions. Club members are welcome to participate in any / all of the activities that interest them. Climate Justice Lakehead was formerly known as Fossil Free Lakehead, which was a student group advocating for LU to divest from the fossil fuel industry. Following a seven year campaign by Fossil Free Lakehead, the LU BOG committed to divestment in 2020, and in 2023, the LU BOG announced that they had divested from the top 200 fossil fuel companies! Climate Justice Lakehead carries this legacy forward.
